Padres Ramblings

(Part 1 of ramblings can be found here, which is dated all the way back in August.)

1. First of all, I would like to thank to those who wrote nice and encouraging comments on my previous entry. I will definitely take the advices and continue blogging. I’m here because I need to do what I love; having fun writing about my Padres. Even though I did not make it on top 100 for 2009 (Which sounds very, very ridiculous.), I will not back down. This should be a minor slump.

2. I recieved a comment from a fellow Padres fan who wrote this on my previous entry as well:

David Eckstein sucks.

Excuse me?! I still can’t believe this came from a fellow Friar Faithful. If you’ve been reading this blog, you should know by now that David Eckstein is my favorite player that I adore so much. It is obviously a plus that this person is a Padres fan. However, I can’t let David Eckstein garbage talk part slide. That was so rude and disrespectful and it was literally like a big slap in my face.

Eck has the word “grit” all over his face. I like this guy a lot because he works hard every single 162 games. He is a type of player that any team would want. He has two World Series ring and plus he was a World Seires MVP with the Cardinals couple of years ago.

Like I mentioned about 13274239012 times, he’s the most experienced player in the Padres and 2010 will be his 10th year in the majors. I don’t care if he’s the oldest out of the bunch. He looks young for his age anyway. I love the energy he brings to this club. He has a ton of energy for a little guy and that is definitely a true example of a true baseball player.

Oh, and this guy knows who I am. He even gave me a big hug when I went to a Padres game.

So therefore, David Eckstein does not suck. End of story.

3. Padres signed 41-year-old Matt Stairs to a minor league deal.

Matt Stairs #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies rounds the bases after he hits a two-run pinch hit home run in the eighth inning off Jonathan Broxton #51 of the Los Angeles Dodgers to take a two-run lead in game Game Four of the National League Championship Series during the 2008 MLB playoffs on October 13, 2008 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

He is obviously a well-experienced vetran and having him is excellent for a very young club. This trade should not and will not hurt us. He did a great job with the Phillies as a backup and a strong backup is what we need. Our bench players have not been very great for last couple of years. I hope Matt Stairs can really bring something to the Padres when he plays in the majors throughout the regular season. It will be exciting to see him wearing a Padres uniform. Hey, he even lost 30 pounds during the offseason so far! Did he use Wii Fit like what Heath Bell did?

4. Relief pitcher Mike Adams avoided arbitration, so which means he will come back in 2010 season.

He is an amazing pitcher with very good numbers. Great move by the front office and I’m glad he’s back with us. The only problem with him is that he gets injured often. As long as he stays healthy throughout spring training and regular season, he should be a solid pitcher once again.

5. Padres Fan Fest will be in 20 days! I cannot wait to see my boys again. I miss all of them so much. There is no information about the Fan Fest whatsoever on the Padres website and I need to know as soon as possible.

6. I want Padres bobbleheads. Fortunately, there will be Padres bobbleheads as promotion, I believe. Seriously, David Eckstein, Kyle Blanks, Everth Cabrera, Chase Headley and Clayton Richard bobbleheads are going to be full of win.

7. I cracked over 900 comments, 20 on my previous entry, which is a new record! Now I have 920. Thank you guys so much for coming back here!

8. “Hell’s Bells” is playing on my iTunes right now. I miss Trevor Hoffman.

9. (The following two are not about the Padres nor baseball.)

San Diego Chargers epically lost to the New York Jets last Sunday. I missed church for a lousy game. Not good at all. Chargers as a team did not look sharp at all. Nate Kaeding was obviously a black hole while rest of the teammates got cr*p load of penalties, quarterback Philip Rivers threw couple of interceptions, etc. The game aggravated me so much! Now that Jets kicked us out of the playoffs, I will definitely not root for them. I would rather pick the Colts over the Jets if I had too.

   My picks are:

   AFC: Colts over Jets

   NFC: Saints over Vikings

   Super Bowl: Saints over Colts

Saints are my last hope. If they fail to impress me, Super Bowl is going to be boring.

10. I mastered LT Dance. Seriously.

“I mastered the LT dance”

… HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! LOL!!!! I can just imagine you doing that dance in your room. That’s too funny!

I love these ramblings cuz sometimes you have so much going on in your system that you just want to let it out in one sitting. Totally understandable. Ehh Football has broken my heart too… Cardinals lost to the Saints and now i’m heartbroken because i feel like my favorite player Kurt Warner is not coming back to the Cardinals or my biggest fear: Not coming back PERIOD. I’m gonna seriously cry if he retires though :(

Pffffft honestly i just can’t stop smiling!! The LT dance is now in my head and so are you dancing to it. Cut it back cut it back. Do your little dance~ hahaha! Wave to your mama

ugh forget the haters hyunyoung (like the korean celebrity plastic barbie doll! Pretty though) Eck is awesome! I loved him ever sine 2002! All angel fans love him how can you not? He’s one of the nicest people in MLB.

It was kind of bad to say anything negative about David on your blog!! We all know how you feel about him.
I always think a veteran at any position is good for the young players. For example Maddux was inspirational to the pitchers, Ausmus was great for Russell, Mark Loretta was just super.
I’m glad you see that you have many supporters. We all love your blog. Wait until the next ratings time!

The Jets aren’t going to win. As much as I find Mark Sanchez amusing, Amusing doesn’t do you any good until after the super bowl. The Saints-Vikings could go either way, but I know a lot of Saints fans who I’d rather not see disappointed.
Congrats on all the comments! Those are more important than the number of visitors–I’d rather have comments because they show that people respond to what you say and take the time to give you more than just a glance.

Don’t you love when people come on your blog and say one of your players sucks – not? How rude! On a lighter note, very exciting about the upcoming Fan Fest. I’m sure you’re looking forward to it.

lol as the offender who made the Lil’ Davie Eckstein comment.

He’s not a good baseball player. He never really has been. The numbers point to that. Did you read what I posted in your comment section?

I mean, I could go back and re-iterate all those points as to why David Eckstein has surpassed Derek Jeter as the most over rated player in baseball but its been done with such a better vocabulary by Ken Tremendous of Fire Joe Morgan fame.

That’s not to say that he can’t be your favorite player. It also doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m sure he’s a good human being who loves his family and all that.

He has, however, earned close to $19 million dollars in his major league career. And he’s had one year–one!–posting above average offensive numbers.

That allows me to say that he sucks. Its nothing personal. He’s a big league player. If I saw him in person, I probably wouldn’t say “Hey, you suck.” But that’s because I wouldn’t really say that to anyone.

When the Padres, or some similarly disgraced franchise, sign someone such as David Eckstein and then tell me in press releases “Hey! This guy was the World Series MVP! He’ll bring veteran leadership!” my standard response is “But he has a ten year track record in the majors of not being able to hit.”

So I’m truly sorry you thought I was being rude. I truly wasn’t attempting to be rude. Still, I won’t say that David Eckstein is good. He may be your favorite player and that, of course, is your right as a fan. But to me, that doesn’t change the fact that he’s a black hole on offense and we (as a team) would be better off sticking any AAA second baseman on the big league team because at least then it would be cheaper. And maybe we could have kept Peavy or some other pipe dream.

Also: David Eckstein has never played in 162 games in one season….so he’s not like Adrian Gonzalez. His career high is 158 in 2005.

Also also: Being the most experienced player on a team does not, in any way, suggest that a player is good. Staying in the big leagues for 10 years does not, in any way, suggest that a player is good. Darin Erstad is a particularly egregious example.

Boy I’d really like to edit that for readability.

Or something. My bad about the carriage returns.

I am sad that Matt left us :O( But you guys will love him…hard worker and a really nice guy.

Glad to see another post. Matt still has some pop.

So, first to the David Eckstein commenter: we are all entitled to our opinions, and you obviously don’t think that Eck is that great of a player. But Hyun Young and I (especially Hyun Young) see a lot in him as a player AND as a person. We both think that he’s done amazing things for this team and he and his wife have been extremely nice to Hyun Young. And, he’s not a black hole on offense. He doesn’t have that many hits or home runs, but to really get at David Eckstein’s game, you have to look beyond the numbers. If we need a walk, he’ll get a walk. If we need to move a runner over, he’ll get down a sac bunt. He does all the little things that don’t get into the box score. He’s not too prideful to do the little things that don’t get any recognition so that his teammates can go out there and get all the glory. Performance on the field isn’t everything, you know. He’s really changed this team as a leader and veteran presence in the clubhouse. The guys are watching him, his great example, and he’s changing them for the better.

“He’s not a good baseball player. He never really has been. The numbers point to that.” This is my point: what he does doesn’t get into the numbers. No, he does not have good numbers but YOU HAVE TO LOOK PAST THAT!!! Look beyond the boxscore. In my mind, he’s worth more than an expensive player with a big bat. He gets the little things done. And besides that, he’s a wonderful person.

Okay, so now to the entry: having Matt Stairs here is going to be very interesting. I can’t help thinking about Tony Clark and Cliff Floyd. We got them to be a pinch-hitter and DH and neither of them worked out very well. Hopefully Matt will do better than they did though! I am soooo excited about Fan Fest but seriously, they need to get some info up ASAP!!! It’s just over two weeks!! Hmmm. The bobbleheads are going to be soo sweet and I miss Trevor. And Jake. And Kouz. And I’m not sure who to cheer for in the Super Bowl. Hmmmmm. Well, GO PADRES!!

great entry
1) I agree Eckstein aint no good. and neither was my english in that sentence.
2) Matt Stairs is one of my favorite players. IMO he is the greatest pinch hitter of all time
3) Fan Day looks awesome!
4) Tony bobblehead looks sweet. I love him, great guy and unbelievable player
5) “I do my dance-I get in my stance” love that LT is hilarious. I’m kind of glad the Jets beat the Chargers (sorry) but I am indeed cheering for the Saints
http://pittpeas.mlblogs.com

Oh, the home runs thing that Kaybee said reminded me of that game against the D-Backs when Eckstein hit a homer to tie the game and it went on for nine more innings. You can’t really beat the force of that much of a chance for your team, can you?

I hope Matt Stairs works out for you guys this year! Though I’ll forever love him for his homer off Broxton in the 2008 playoffs, he couldn’t seem to repeat that performance in ’09. I think he needs more playing time than he got in Philly to stay sharp at the plate. And he makes no secret that he swings for the fences every at bat. Not necessarily the best approach. Oh, and I’m rooting for the Saints in the Super Bowl as well.
