July Evaluation
Once again, I’m sorry for lack of updates and entries. If you are thinking “Where did Hyun Young go?”, I’m back in school. Yes, you read the word “school” right. I’m in school as a sophomore now. Summer break was extremely short and I miss my long, relaxing summer break which was about two and a half months long. More summer means more baseball.
As for the Padres, their performance for the month of July was pretty sloppy, to be honest. Veteran David Eckstein was placed on the DL about a week ago and the Padres are currently playing without his leadership. Players like Jerry Hairston and Mat Latos are playing their “A” games but unfortunately, there are players who are not getting their jobs done. Everth Cabrera has been in a slump lately when it comes to bats. The two problems for him right now are that he is way too aggressive at the plate and he wants to hit almost every pitch he sees. Also, when he has two strikes, he has a tendency to get out quickly, especially in a scoring situation. I understand being at the plate with two strikes is nerve wrecking but he needs to relax and overcome that situation. This category falls into some of the young players like Will Venable. I want to see improvement from the first place team in the NL West for the remainder of the season.
On the good side however, the Padres finished July over .500 and with the record of 14-10. July is over which means it is time for another evaluation. Here are the top 5 greatest moments for the month of July.
5. Sweeping the D-Backs and the Pirates

The D-Backs came to San Diego for a three-game series. On the 16th, it was the very first game of the second half season. Padres ultimately won with the dramatic score of 12-1. I was able to go to the following game and saw a great win by the Padres with my friends. That game included four homeruns and one of them was an inside the park homerun by Tony Gwynn. The final score that day was 8-5. The third and final game of the series included drama. Arizona’s Mark Reynolds got in a brawl with San Diego’s Everth Cabrera. You can check out the video here. Petco Park was heated and temper was all over the place. Unfortunately, Everth Cabrera got ejected and Mark Reynolds did not. On the good side, the Padres ultimately swept the D-Backs.
Padres hit the road to play against the Pirates. Before the Pirates series, Padres had to face the Braves in Atlanta and that series was not good at all. Lack of offense and pitching costed the Padres to lose the series against the Braves. In order to recover, Padres played their “A” games. Padres bounced back smoothly and rewarded themselves with a sweet sweep in Pittsburg.
4. Acquiring Miguel Tejada and Ryan Ludwick

Acquiring Miguel Tejada and Ryan Ludwick were smart moves made by the general manager Jed Hoyer. Miguel Tejada is a six-time All-Star, 2005 All-Star Game MVP, and 2002 AL MVP. Although he is not the same player as couple of years ago, his ability to play solid baseball is very acceptable. I hope he can contribute for this first place team, who has a potential to reach the playoffs this year.
Ryan Ludwick was acquired right on the trade deadline. His performance on the field is very enjoyable and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite Padre. He made his debut as a Padre today and earned his very first Padre hit at his very first at-bat. With the acquisition of Ryan Ludwick, Padres outfield is going to be a bit tricky. Currently, we have Ryan Ludwick, Tony Gwynn, Chris Denorfia, Will Venable and Scott Hairston. It’s going to be interesting how the Padres are going to figure out this puzzle.
3. Going to the incredible game on the 17th.
This doesn’t apply to the fans but I think this story needs to be mentioned numerous amount of times. I had a blast on the 17th, getting a tour of the press box, watching a great Padres win and meeting the Ecksteins. This game was the best one I went to in my life. So far. To make a long story short, check out this entry for details.
2. Taking the series from the Dodgers

Padres hosted the Dodgers for “The Battle of the NL West”. First game was extremely close because Jon Garland’s performance for the Padres was lights out. However, he made a mistake which costed him two runs and that ended up being the final score. On the offensive side, Padres blew so many chances to score, especially in a bases loaded situation. Padres got what they deserved on that day; a loss. Not being able to use those chances can cost them a devastating loss. The next day, the boys turned things around by beating the Dodgers with the score of 6-1. The final game consisted of a sweet walk-off victory. Oscar Salazar drove in the game winning run for the Padres and the team grabbed the series from the Dodgers.
1. Finishing the month of July in first place

Baseball is already underway of the second half of the season, which means the teams who have the potential to reach the playoffs must get serious. Padres are one of the teams and I am not bragging. This team does not get a lot of attention on television but that does not mean we are backing down. We are doing our best to get stronger and better than other teams. For the month of July, Padres’ record was 14-10, with an overall record of 60-42. Not including today’s game. This team is not just “Baby Padres” or “Young Team”. We are much more than that. I would like to see more eye-popping names for the Padres. Padres consist of not one player, but everyone contributing to make this club into a first place team. Be afraid of the Padres.

Padres win, middle school over, life is good.
I just got back from 8th grade promotion. So middle school is officially over for me. I will be going to high school next month, almost at the end of July. 8th grade was so much fun and I just turned to next chapter of my life.
But I got really sick yesterday. I had a terrible fever so I missed promotion practice and 8th grade party. Thank God I got better quickly and able to make it today. Even though I was sick, I didn’t miss Padres baseball on TV. No matter what, I will never miss any of the broadcast.
So that’s that. As for the Padres, they FINALLY won the first game against the Dodgers at LA this season. The part that was really cool was that they got the victory with sand uniforms. I hate them.

See, they hate them too!! And I’m pretty sure every member of the Padres don’t enjoy wearing them at road. I seriously want to burn each and every one of the uniforms. But anyway, my point is that I’m glad we won yesterday. Kevin Correia was a huge part of this.
Allowing no runs and only one run were major keys to a victory for Correia. Even with a short three day rest, he pitched really well last night. He even retired 15 in a row! So Correia totally deserved the win and the bullpen helped him as well.
The final score was 3 to 1, Padres victory! Those three runs were from Kevin Kouzmanoff, Edgar Gonzalez, and Chase Headley. Great job and thanks guys! They were enough to get a win.
Other side

Catcher Nick Hundley did not play last night like he’s supposed to. He has a bruised left wrist and his x-rays were negative. It’s very likely for him to miss few gams so I’m hopoing that he will be alright very soon!
As for Padres shortstop Josh Wilson, I’m about to give him a free pass to Triple-A.
He is not doing a great job right now. I’m not very happy about it and he should feel the same too. The shortstop has one hit in his past 21 at-bats. Batting average for is pretty laughable with .105 with a .190 on-base percentage.

Sorry man, but you need to go very soon.
Padres vs. Angels
My brother is an Angels fan and I am a Padres fan. I’m really looking forward to weekend series at Anaheim because we will be cheering for our teams during the broadcast. I bet him that the Padres are going to beat the Angels tomorrow. This should be a very interesting game since it’s the first interleague showdown for this season.
Guess who?

Ok. I really gave that one away. Yes, it’s TREVOR HOFFMAN. He’s doing a great job in Milwaukee and I am so proud of him. He has 15 saves without giving up a single run. I really, really miss this guy. He was San Diego’s all-time favorite, and obviously mine as well. I just wanted to bring this up to show how he’s doing. It’s still unbelieveable to see him saving for a complete different team!
Trevor, good luck and finish strong this season! Hopefully we will hear a word about you possibly returning to San Diego.
Nice win boys!
Especially a game like this, my boys deserve a pat on their backs. Jake Peavy looked great on the mound as usual. Although he had difficulties with his right ankle a liitle bit an got a cut on his left middle finger, he didn’t make a huge fuss about it. I love Jake. He’s a competitor and guys who are focused and looking for a victory everytime they are on the mound always wins. In this case, Jake totally deserved the win.
When a pitcher throws great like that, he definitely needs an offensive backup. Kouz was able to do that for Jake. Kevin didn’t start off great by flying out to right-center field and grounding into a double play. But he really concentrated and got his job done very well. He was responsible for four runs for the Padres. Without his bat, we could’ve lost. Doing a little math, the real final score which is six, minus four will be two and the D-Backs scored three.

Great job Kouz! Now why don’t you celebrate with Adrian now?

Speaking of Adrian, he batted third on this game. As most of the Padres fans know, hitters who bat behind Gonzo really struggles by hitting below .200 but Kouz dramatically changed that stat.
Adrian, Adrian, Adrian. He got walked three times on this game. Now the pitchers know what to do when our best hitter is up: walk this man. Is it just me or are the opponent pitchers really afraid of Gonzo still? My goodness. I really want some long balls from him now! No pressure on you man. You’ll do this for us, the fans, very soon. I just know it.
David Eckstein was a part of this so I was happy. He hit a sac fly to bring in a tying run to the plate in the fifth inning.
Devistating D-Back
Eric Byrnes missed the ball from Padres Josh Wilson so Byrnes was really, really, really mad which I defintiely approve. I just HATE this guy, no offense to Arizona fans. He needs anger management issues and calm down when the littlest things happen that makes him upset.
Are you freaking blind!?
Jake was obviously upset at the second base umpire. It was the most bu**sh** call ever! Eric Byrnes wanted to steal to second. Ok. I’m ok with that. Catcher Henry Blanco threw it the ball to Josh Wilson and got Byrnes out before he touched second base. Well apparently, the ump needs to get better glasses or get new contacts ’cause he called Byrnes safe when Wilson got him on the hand AND shoulder. The ump still called him safe. ARGHHHHHHH!!!
I was really mad to hear that stupid call that wasn’t even true. Josh and Jake were the ones who were most frustrated out of the bunch. Umpires haven been getting on my nerves lately. They make calls that are not even true!
Goin’ to LA
It’s time…
to face the Dodgers. You know, this game should be fun instead of sad. I’m confident that my boys will do the similar things to such as come back when they are down by couple of runs, great pitching and offense, no errors, you get the idea.
Chris Young will take care for the Padres and Chad Billingsley will do his job. It will be a very interesting game to watch.
Awards
At 6 o’ clock, I went to my school to be a part of the 8th grade Award Asssembly. In the end, I came back home with seven awards in my hands which included President’s so I was very pleased with that.
Fun fact: For perfect attendeance category (I was in it as well), our names were in a raffle and two lucky people got jerseys from Adrian Gonzalez and San Diego Chargers’ Ladainian Tomlinson. I reallly wanted Adrian’s. Unfortunately, I wasn’t one of two people so better luck next time for me!
An absolute painful game
We lost 1-0 yesterday by the Dodgers. I REALLY felt sorry for Jake ’cause he pitched his heart out, had best outing of this season, dominated Los Angeles by striking out eight men, and got a no-decision.

Jake proved to people that his slow start will soon come to an end. It happened but there was lack of run support. Wait. We didn’t score ANY runs. I’m going to say this straight ahead: You guys, what is wrong with you? Well obviously, fans don’t say that to their favorite teams. But I have a good reason. I’m starting to lose my patience little bit everyday. If your pitcher is out on the mound, trying to give you an oppertunity to score some runs, you need to take the advantage. However, the Padres did not do that yesterday.
Jake Peavy. Wow. He was on fire and very aggresive. Jake only allowed two singles. Not a double, triple, or homerun. Just singles. As I watched the game and kept track of his strike and ball ratio, it was a HUGE difference. I believe it was in the 8th inning and he threw just over 30 balls and more then 70 strikes. Obviously, he struck out batters. 8 Dodgers to be exact. Heck even Manny struck out in three straight pitches! That was the only part of the game I enjoyed, aside from Scott Hairston’s double. Manny struck out twice yesterday
I gotta say, Clayton Kershaw was pretty good as well. He’s only 21 but he sure can pitch. There’s a huge difference between throwing and pitching. In yesterday’s case, he pitched and pitched.
Now, runners in scoring position for the Padres. They were 0 for 9. That was the most painful part of the game last night. Padres had so much chance but they just simply blew it. Do you know who else blew it? Duaner Sanchez. He was jammed. Look at this.
Roller coaster game
It sure was. We ended up losing to the Dodgers tonight.

Josh Geer was up for the Padres and James McDonald got the start for the Dodgers. Things were looking pretty good for my boys because they took an early 3-1 lead. McDonald allowed three runs and walked four batters. He left the mound in only two innings.
Later in the game, the Padres were winning, 5 to 4. They got the runs by Adrian Gonzalez, a very solid hitter right now, who now has 20 RBIs this season. Padres later scored the go-ahead run on Kevin Kouzmanoff’s fielder’s choice. The Dodgers got some runs back in the third inning with one homerun each for Orlando Hudson and Manny Ramirez. Josh gave up both of them. I have to give credits to that guy though. He got a RBI single to “make” up what he did. But that wasn’t enough fo LA.
Dodgers tied the game on Mark Loretta’s RBI single and then took the 6-5 lead when Casey Blake raced home from third base when a throw from outfielder Brian Giles got past catcher Nick Hundley. Catcher Nick Hundley made an error which gave the Dodgers a lead even more. Final score in LA was 8-5, the Dodgers with a victory.
Do you want to leadoff, Mr. Brian Giles?
He’s usually a number three hitter. But tonight, he fliped-flopped with Jody Gerut. Our skipper Buddy Black gave a change to the lineup. In my opinion, it didn’t work out as I though it would be. Oh well.
Oh David, you are SO hilarious!
Take a look at this. Credits to Union-Tribune.
Headleyville?
The Dodgers opened an 11-game homestand Thursday night by unveiling Mannywood – a section of left-field seats where $99 (Manny’s number) buys two tickets and two T-shirts.
Which gave David Eckstein, a political science major while at the University of Florida, an idea for a “Headleyville” section at Petco Park.
“But we’d have to change (Headley’s) number,” Eckstein said. “You couldn’t be packaging tickets and T-shirts for $7.”
AHHH! This is cute. He’s a great guy. Hey, it’s not a bad idea at all! I have to agree with ”changing” Chase’s number IF we are going to do this.
Jake vs. Clayton
Jake is off to a pretty rocky start. He is 2-3 with 5.74 ERA. Not what I had in mind. Number two pitcher for the Padres, Chris Young has the same EXACT ERA as Jake! Clayton Kershaw in the other hand, is 0-2 with 7.29 ERA. I think the Padres are going to win tomorrow’s game by taking advantage of Clayton Kershaw. GO PADRES!!
Sorry
To everyone who is reading this entry right now:
I understand everything about my last entry. The thing that bugged me is that I can see the pictures but you guys can’t. I did my best to fix all the pictures and entry. I feel really bad and hopefully the same situation won’t happen again. I have a backup. Here’s the link. This one works. I am 100 percent positive.
Switching gears to Padres now, yesterday was the opening game for my boys. It HAD to be the Dodgers to start off the season. Jake pitched but he suffered with a loss. He lost to the Dodgers first time since 2003! Final score was 4 to 1. The only run by the Padres was a RBI by Brian Giles. I noticed something. The hitters can’t support Jake!! Not enough run support means a loss.
I’m not in the greatest mood right now. The only thing that will make me better are my boys, the Padres. Today, Chris Young is up against a former Padre Randy Wolf. Hopefully the friars can come up with many runs plus a win tonight. GO PADRES!!
Padres Fan Day: Part 1
This is gonna be a really short entry.
So today was the Fan Day at PETCO and I had a blast! I got four autographs and a picture with a Padre. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow. I cannot wait for opening day! Thank goodness it’s spring break for me so which means I can sit back, relax and watch my boys play on TV. Padres vs. Dodgers, 4:05 PM, it’s on. GO PADRES!
